Sri Sumanajothi Dhamma School
The Sri Sumanajothi Dhamma School, a cornerstone of the Austin Buddhist Vihara’s outreach and educational efforts, was lovingly established in 2007 under the vision of the late Venerable Sumanajothi Thero. As the revered founder and former spiritual leader of the Vihara, his foresight in creating this school underscores his deep commitment to nurturing the spiritual and cultural understanding of the community’s youth. The school’s foundation rests on the dedication of temple devotees who, in close cooperation with the resident monastic community, volunteer their time and expertise to guide young minds.

With the support of our lead teacher Ms. Carey Dukes, the curriculum is carefully designed to provide a introduction to Buddhist principles, encompassing fundamental concepts such as the Four Noble Truths, the Eightfold Path, and the principles of karma and rebirth. Through engaging lessons and age-appropriate activities, children from preschool through the 8th grade delve into the inspiring life story of Siddhartha Gautama, the historical Buddha, learning about his journey to enlightenment and the core tenets of his teachings. Furthermore, the rich tapestry of Jataka Tales, traditional stories illustrating the Buddha’s past lives and emphasizing moral virtues, are woven into the curriculum to impart ethical values and wisdom. Recognizing the importance of cultural identity, the school also dedicates time to exploring the vibrant cultural heritage of Sri Lanka, the birthplace of Theravada Buddhism which deeply influences the Austin Buddhist Vihara. This includes aspects of its traditions, customs, and significant cultural events.
Ms. Carey has served as a teacher at the Dhamma School since 2009, contributing to the clarity of understanding and inner peace of her students.

A distinctive feature of the Sri Sumanajothi Dhamma School is its commitment to fostering leadership and community involvement. Upon the successful completion of the 8th-grade curriculum, graduating students are offered a unique opportunity to transition into the role of teaching assistants. This peer-mentorship model not only reinforces their own understanding of the teachings but also allows them to serve as positive role models for younger students, embodying the values they have learned. Their contribution is considered invaluable, fostering a sense of continuity and shared responsibility within the Dhamma School community.

Over the years, the students of the Sri Sumanajothi Dhamma School have actively engaged in a wide array of enriching activities that extend beyond the classroom. Their participation in Vesak commemorations, the most significant Buddhist festival, has included organizing and performing in insightful plays and creating artistic displays that celebrate the Buddha’s birth, enlightenment, and passing. Cultural presentations have provided a platform for students to showcase their understanding and appreciation of Sri Lankan traditions through music, dance, and storytelling. Moreover, the school instills the importance of compassion and social responsibility through participation in various community service initiatives, fostering a sense of interconnectedness and the practical application of Buddhist principles in daily life. The Sri Sumanajothi Dhamma School stands as a testament to the Austin Buddhist Vihara’s dedication to education, spiritual development, and the cultivation of a strong, compassionate community.
